Spiridoula, our tiny fierce survivor

Sometimes we wonder how some of these creatures see the world.

Spiridoula was found by the rubbish bins near Theda’s house. She had a massive wound in her mouth, had her teeth removed, and stayed with us in a cage in the Kittygarten for a long time — because what would she have eaten with such a painful mouth and no teeth, out by the bins? She barely weighs 1.5 kilograms: just skin and bones and a fierce little attitude.

We all got bitten and scratched just trying to change her water or clean her litter. It wasn’t really the confinement she hated, but the people who came every day bringing her the tastiest food and softest treats. We were the source of her anxiety. So we hung thick gloves on her cage, so every volunteer could stroke her, touch her, and slowly show her that she was safe. Then the cage was opened and she could go out… she tried, but she didn’t really want to.

She couldn’t live in a cage for her whole life, so eventually she went outside. She disappeared, reappeared — still cautious, still keeping her distance. This tiny little scrap of a cat, who knows how old she is, is FIV positive.

Feline Immunodeficiency Virus weakens a cat’s immune system and makes them more vulnerable to infections. It is not transmissible to humans and is not easily passed to other cats.

Then she disappeared again, and we thought that with her fragile health and no teeth, we had lost her. But she returned — dehydrated — and we put her back in her cage. And she is so happy there. So safe. She now lets us stroke her and comes out to observe the world, but somehow she seems to look at it a little differently now, with a little less fear.

Could you sponsor this tiny girl’s soft food and vitamins, please? She is just starting to regain a little hope and trust in this world, and we would really love to help her keep it. ❤️
