Mother cats regularly leave their kittens while searching for food and may hide while people are nearby. If the kittens are warm, clean and safe, keep your distance and observe before moving them.

Seek help if they are injured, cold, extremely weak, constantly crying or in immediate danger.

Pain and fear can make even a friendly cat bite or scratch. Protect yourself as well as the animal.

Sick & injured

Eye infections can become serious

Watery, crusted, swollen or closed eyes should not be ignored, especially in young kittens.

Untreated eye infections can permanently damage the eye and may lead to loss of sight, especially in young kittens. Act early.

In Greece, antibiotic eye drops containing tobramycin, such as Eyetobrin, are commonly available from pharmacies and may be used in the treatment of eye infections. Ask a veterinarian or pharmacist for advice before using medication on a cat, particularly if the eye is badly swollen, injured, cloudy or remains closed.

Never use steroid-containing eye drops without veterinary advice.

Heavy infestations can become a serious health problem, particularly for kittens and weakened cats. Outdoor cats may also suffer from internal parasites such as worms.

Do not give treatments unless the product and correct dosage are known. Never use dog flea products on cats, as some ingredients can be highly toxic to them.

Veterinary help

Need a vet?

If a cat is sick or injured and you can safely take it to a veterinarian, these practices may be able to help. Please call before travelling, as opening hours and emergency availability can change.

In an emergency

If possible, call the veterinary practice first. Explain that you have found a stray cat, describe its condition and ask whether they can see the animal.

No carrier? Ask the vet – many practices can lend a cat carrier and may also have a humane trap available for cats that cannot safely be picked up.

On-call veterinary rota

Corfu also operates a rotating on-call veterinary service for dogs and cats on designated days. The practice on duty changes, so check the current schedule and always call the on-call vet before travelling.
