Goodbye, Baby Cupid

Another sad goodnight.

You say and we want to believe THEY are safe with us. We take in abandoned ones, we nurse them back to health, we show them love and we try to protect them...

We know that we are often last resort, hope, safe place they can call home for a bit or forever. We know most would not have survived alone on the street anyway — and maybe that’s what makes it harder when we lose them.

Baby Cupid, found alone in the rain on the street, was accepted by Niki and her babies. He seemed ok, he ate, he slept, he was loved. A couple of days ago he started to lose weight, he seemed to have flu. We started feeding him formula and gave him drops of antibiotic as he struggled to breathe. But then hypothermia kicked in and he refused to eat.

He didn’t make it. He was so tiny.

You say and we want to believe they are safe with us, but safe from what? Viruses they are born with? Illnesses they can contract from others? Cars? Dogs? Injuries that could lead to sepsis? Poison they might find around, or after eating a poisoned rat? Fishbones or chicken bones from the nearby bins? Stray and vicious males who visit? Evil humans?

We are not sure whether it was the virus that killed him — for the safety of others we had tests done, and he was positive for coronavirus — or whether it was something else. But as hard as we tried to save him... we failed.

Rest in peace, Baby Cupid. You really were a little innocent angel. 🤍
